SOME P50 million will be saved by the Senate each year once it cuts down the number of congressional oversight committees, the chamber’s leader said Tuesday.
But Senate President Franklin Drilon said they have yet to identify which oversight committees—created by a law or resolution to monitor the implementation of specific laws—will be abolished or retained.
“We (senators) have reached a consensus that there is a need to rationalize the oversight committees so that we can save on public funds,” he said.
Earlier, Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto was looking at reducing the number of these committees from 35 to 24. As a result, each senator will get a committee with a uniform budget.
The Senate President said the rationalization of the oversight committees is just one of the reforms that are going to be implemented in the 16th Congress.
Drilon’s predecessor, Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, quit from the post before the end of the 15th Congress in June after his distribution of P1.6 million in additional maintenance and other operating expenses to 18 colleagues last December was perceived as Christmas gift.
The controversy was cited as one of the reasons behind the defeat of his son, former Cagayan Representative Jack Enrile, in last May’s senatorial polls. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
