UNITED Nationalist Alliance secretary general and campaign manager, Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco belittled the prediction of Senator Franklin Drilon that the ruling Liberal Pary would win all 12 vacant Senate seats in next year’s election.
Tiangco said the most recent voter preference surveys conducted by pollsters Pulse Asia and Social Weather Stations show that at least five UNA senatorial candidates are favored by voters.
They are Rep. Jose Victor Ejercito (4th), Rep. Juan Ponce “Jack” Enrile Jr. (5th), Sen. Gregorio Honasan (6th), ex-Rep. Juan Miguel Zubiri (9th), and Vice President Jejomar Binay’s daughter Nancy (12th).
That does not include common candidates Senators Francis Joseph Escudero and Loren Legarda, who are both included in the UNA and LP slates, Tiangco said.
“Definitely, my fearless forecast is that we will not zero,” Tiangco said. “We will try our best to get most of the [Senate] seats.”
Tiangco, the UNA campaign manager, made the remark after Drilon claimed in a television interview that the ruling party would be able to shut out the opposition in next year’s elections.
The UNA campaign manager declined to predict how many seats the opposition would be able to get. “I cannot say this early. My job is to make a good campaign so the people can see our candidates and choose to vote our senatorial lineup.”
Even their local bets in Metro Manila are seen to be easy winners, although UNA only fielded eight of 17 mayoral candidates in the National Capital Region.
He said former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada has a large margin over incumbent Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim. Speaking in behalf of his brother Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco, “I will humbly say that his track records will speak for himself.”
He said surveys show that UNA mayoral candidates, namely Reps. Oca Malapitan (Caloocan), Rexlon Gatchalian (Valenzuela), Mayors Guia Gomez (San Juan), Aldrin San Pedro (Muntinlupa) and Mayor Junjun Binay (Makati), are almost certain winners.
“As what Manila Standard have said, UNA mayors will likely have a walk in the park during the elections,” Tiangco said. “But a lot of changes can still happen, so the challenge for UNA slate is to do better than what the surveys say.”
